Composting

Composting is another important process that turns two major sources of trash - food and paper waste - into treasure. This organic material is found in a range of industries, and can be composted to create nutrient-rich products used in organic farming, sod farming, landscaping and gardening.

Compostable materials include:

  • Industrial food manufacturing residues
  • Yard waste (leaves, grass clippings, brush from landscaping companies or park districts)
  • Industrial paper manufacturing residues
  • Wood waste (supplied by construction companies)
  • All types of fruit and vegetables (whole and scraps)
  • Industrial filter cakes, belt filter press sludge cake and dissolved air flotation (DAF) streams
  • Coffee and tea grounds/bags
  • Shredded newspaper
  • Wood ash
  • Straw
  • Sawdust and wood chips
  • Forest wood and residues
  • Agriculture residuals
